Wild Tobacco (Nicotiana Rustica)
Tobacco is one of the four sacred medicines, along with cedar, sage and sweetgrass. Indigenous Peoples across what is now known as North, South and Central America have been cultivating and trading wild tobaccos for millenia to be used for ceremonial, medicinal, and teaching purposes. Colonization has changed our relationship with this sacred plant. Unfortunately, many now associate tobacco with cigarettes, cancer and the ‘tobacco industry’, instead of prayer, respect, and healing. We share these wild tobacco seeds with you as a gift of gratitude and reciprocity, moving away from a reliance on chemically-laden, industrially produced tobacco for ceremonial use. Each of these tiny seeds has the potential to grow into a strong, beautiful 1-3 meter yellow-flowering plant that will produce hundreds of seeds that can be collected and shared once more. We acknowledge the cultural significance and use of tobacco differs among Indigenous Peoples and should be respected. We acknowledge the sacred cedar tree and its significance here on the territories we work from.
Growing instructions:
The seeds can be started indoors in Spring and can be transplanted after about 50 days. Alternatively, well after the last frost, you can sow the seeds directly into the ground, pressing into the surface of the soil. Sow a few seeds approximately 12-24 inches apart. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination (approximately 10-20 days). Continue to keep seedlings well-watered and in a sunny area. Tobacco grows best in rich, well-drained, well-fertilized soil. Please be mindful of the natural environment and only plant these tobacco seeds in garden areas or contained spaces.
There are many ways of harvesting, drying, and curing tobacco. One method is by collecting the leaves once the plant reaches maturity, hanging the leaves to dry sufficiently, removing the stalk, and tightly wrapping them in a wool blanket. The leaves will begin releasing ammonia and begin the curing process. They should be removed every several days to breathe, and be stretched and smudged. The process will take multiple weeks to complete. Please consult a knowledge holder before beginning the process to ensure respect for the medicine.
