Zoom
What is Zoom?
Zoom is the video conferencing platform we're using for the workshop. Zoom allows us to see and hear each other on the screen, communicate with everybody via the chat box, and share screens so participants can see presentations and photos.
How do I access Zoom?
You can access Zoom using a laptop or desktop computer, a tablet or iPad, or by phone. The CCP Workshop will be fun and engaging however you decide to join us, but keep in mind that if you call in, you won’t be able to see speakers, your fellow workshop participants, or the visual content we’ll be sharing on the screen. The information to access our Zoom meetings for the pre-workshop sessions and the CCP Workshop will be sent in advance to the e-mail address you provide to us on the Registration Form.
Next, you will need the Zoom app which you can download from https://zoom.us/download. If you already have Zoom, please update to the latest version of Zoom so you have access to all the new features and settings. You can check for updates by logging into your Zoom desktop or mobile app, clicking your profile photo and selecting “check for updates”. Full instructions on updating to the latest version of Zoom can be found here.
There are three main functions on your device that help you participate in a Zoom call:
If you’re having trouble accessing the Zoom platform on the day of the CCP Workshop, e-mail us at [email protected] or call 250-574-7638.
Is Zoom safe to use?
Zoom offers standard encryption for all meetings. Like any online platform, however, Zoom is not entirely private, so isn’t the place to share sensitive or secret information about you or your community. We recommend being cautious around sharing (verbally or in the chat) your personal information while on Zoom. You can read Zoom's privacy statement here.
Only those who have registered in advance for the meeting will receive a meeting invitation to join the CCP Workshop Zoom. You will be placed in a virtual “waiting room” before the meeting begins and one of the CCP Workshop hosts will be manually approving everyone to enter the meeting space.

Zoom Tips
- There will be many of us participating in the CCP Workshop, so we ask that you put your microphone on Mute using the Mute button (an icon of a microphone) on the bottom left-hand corner of your Zoom window. When you'd like to speak, press the same icon to unmute yourself to share with the group.
- You can also turn your camera on and off using the button at the lower left corner of the Zoom meeting window (it is right beside the Mute button).
- In the upper-right corner of the Zoom window, you can select "Gallery View" to show everyone in small boxes or "Speaker View" to show primarily the person speaking.
- To change your name, click the three dots that appear in the top left corner of your video window. You will see an option that says "rename" which will allow you to change the name that appears to everyone on the Zoom meeting.
- We invite participants to share your name and your pronouns in your Zoom name, if you are comfortable. Sharing our pronouns (like she/her, he/him or they/them) and using the right pronouns for others, is one way we can support a more inclusive, welcoming space for people of diverse genders, including 2 Spirit community members. If you would like to learn more, check out this short article about pronouns in Chatelaine or this talk about queer and two-spirit identities by Harlan Pruden.

- If you are working from home and would prefer not to have others see what is going on behind you, try using a Zoom Virtual Background. You will need either the computer desktop version of Zoom or the smartphone app, and a newer computer/phone to use this feature. Instructions on how to add Zoom backgrounds can be found here.
- If you have a slower internet connection, the video quality may be jumpy, and the sound may cut in and out, especially if too many people speak at once. If this is happening, try turning off your own video and/or avoiding using a virtual background.
- If you are having technical difficulties, you can send a message to those attending the meeting by clicking on "Chat" in the centre bottom of the Zoom window. A tech host will be able to assist you. You can also post your question in the “tech-support” Slack channel or reach out to Vanessa at [email protected] or 250-574-7638.
- The breakout sessions will be recorded and shared online on a dedicated CCP Workshop Youtube channel after the close of the workshop. We will announce to everyone before we begin to record each day. If you do not want to have your face or name recorded, you can turn your video off and change your name via the instructions above.
- Breakout rooms: Zoom now has the ability for participants to self select and move to different breakout rooms on their own. To do this, once the host has launched breakout rooms, click the breakout room button (it has four small squares as an icon) on the bottom bar of your Zoom screen. This will open a new window where you can see the available breakout rooms. Hover your mouse over the number to the right of the breakout room you want to join and click "join". You may be asked to confirm again by clicking "join" again. This can be done at any time while the breakout rooms are open so you can move yourself to a new session at any time you like.
If you are unsure about how to do this or have a computer that doesn't allow this feature, the host can still move you manually to your breakout room. You can let the host know which room you want to go to by adding the number of your breakout room to the front of your Zoom name (see re-naming instructions in bullet point above): for example, “1 - Lara (she/her)”. You can also type the breakout room number in the chat.
Slack
What is Slack?
Slack is a messaging platform you can access on a computer and through a smartphone app. It will allow you to communicate with workshop attendees even after the Zoom call ends. You can message someone individually or post in one of the “channels”. A channel is like a big group message with a specific theme or topic. You can join channels that are of interest to you to chat with other CCP Workshop participants and share stories, links and photos with each other.
CCP Workshop hosts will also use Slack as another way to communicate with you. Any important messages will be sent by e-mail, but we will also have an “announcements” channel where you will be able to see all of our announcements and updates in one place.
How do I access Slack?
We will be using the same CCP Workshop Slack channel as the 2020 BC Region Workshop. This means if you signed up last year, you should still have access to that Slack workspace when you log in to Slack!
If you are new to the CCP Workshop or Slack this year, we will send you an invitation from Slack to join our "workspace". We will also send you an e-mail to let you know that we're going to start using Slack so you know to look for your invitation - including in your junk mail folder! The invitation will ask you to create an account with Slack. Below are instructions for accepting your invitation and accessing Slack through computers and on your phone.
Desktop/Laptop
IOS (iPhones)
To continue accessing Slack, open the app now on your phone. You should see our workspace and the list of channels you can participate in.
Android (most other phones)
To continue accessing Slack, open the app now on your phone. You should see our workspace and the list of channels you can participate in.
Is Slack safe to use?
Slack has a number of security features, including encryption, to protect the privacy and security of your data. Only those who have received an invitation to join our workspace will be able to see and share things in our channels. However, like Zoom, it is not an entirely private space. Slack stores messages sent and received on data servers located within the US and Europe. We recommend being cautious about sharing information that would normally be kept confidential or private for you or your community. You do have the option of deleting any personal information on your Slack profile and deleting your account at any time.

Slack Tips
- You can reply directly to someone's comment by creating a sub-thread. To create a sub-thread on your desktop, hover over the message you want to respond to and click "reply". This will nest your reply under the message, thus creating the thread. If you are on your phone, click on the message you want to reply to and hold your finger down and a similar menu should pop up with the option to 'reply in thread'.
- You can “mention” or “tag” someone by typing the “@” key and then the person’s Slack name. For example, I could say “Hey @Lara, how are you doing today?”. If Lara has her mention notifications on, she will receive a notification to her phone or desktop that I’ve sent her that message.
- "Starring" a channel can help you organize your Slack space by creating a list of priority channels you want to engage with. To do this, right click on the channel you want to add to your list and select "Star channel". You should now see it at the top of your channel list.
- To put a space between paragraphs if you are writing a longer message on your desktop, hold the "shift key" and click "enter". If you are on your phone, click the "return" button.
- Change your name and profile photo by clicking the square box with your initials or profile photo in the top right hand corner. Then select ‘edit profile’ to change your name, photo and title. You do not need to add your phone number to your Slack profile for the CCP Workshop.
- Slack will send you notifications (pop ups on your phone or computer, sounds or buzzes) for different actions that happen in the workspace. You can adjust your notification settings by clicking your profile picture in the top right hand corner and selecting “preferences”. You can choose to get notifications for all messages, only direct messages or mentions to you, or for no messages at all.
- Under the accessibility tab of preferences, you can turn off animations and make adjustments to screen reader settings.
